Striving for a Low-carbon, Eco-friendly and Energy-saving Dyeing Industry

For the most part of the world, economic development is not so much a core issue of globalization as climate change in the 21st century. Regional natural phenomena and disasters could not only cause serious local casualty but also impact worldwide life and living, the latest example being the Iceland’s volcanic eruption. Environmental awareness and corporate social responsibility are becoming part of a company image for brands and enterprises, voluntarily or mandatorily. In the foreseeable future, global as well as regional and national laws and regulations on the ecological aspect of products and production process can only get more and more stringent. Working toward a low-carbon, energy-saving and pollution-reducing industry is a major issue for textile and textile-related enterprises in Taiwan.

Everlight Chemical is the first corporation in Taiwan to set up the Environmental Accounting System, which provides important eco-efficiency and resource productivity indices for management decision making. The company makes a commitment to pursue sustainable development and is constantly researching and developing cleaner products and production.

As one of the pre-show activities for TITAS 2010, a seminar entitled “New Concept for Dyeing Industry” was held on May 12. Hosted by Dr. Wei-Wang Chen, General Manager of Everlight Chemical, the seminar presented the latest development in eco textile products and relevant regulations.

The first part of the seminar was on the development and impact of European REACH regulation. Jack Huang, Manger of Everlight’s Safety Health & Environment Division, told the audience about the registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemicals in EU and how to be an eligible textile supplier for this important market. Laurence Song, Manager of Technical Service Division, then shared with the audience the new concept of dyeing in the product development of Everlight Chemical. Mr. Song emphasized the importance of quality dyestuffs which can reduce textiles production cost and in the meantime, reach eco-efficiency through low-carbon properties. The last part of the seminar was presented by Mr. Chen, Director of Research & Development Division, on the certification of eco textiles, focusing on the list of restricted substances and GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) criteria.
